What should you bring to your hospital delivery in Minot?

If you're planning an unmedicated birth in Minot I have something you're going to love!

The time has come for you to pack your bags for the trip of a lifetime, going to the hospital to meet your newest addition. BUT, this isn't an ordinary list. This is one crafted just for Minot mamas to be planning a med-free birth.

I remember being a first time mom and not having any idea what to pack. I looked at a million different lists that all had different things just for me to scrap every single one and make it up as I go. I ended up way overpacking (as most first time mom's do) and we didn't actually bring the essentials. So this list is designed just for you to help you not forget the important things. Packing a go bag for this special day shouldn't be stressful, which is why I'm here!

And if you're looking for some options as you're packing you should check out Rebel Threadzz! They have a ton of goodies from baby's first outfit, their announcement signs, up to the teething stage with essential oils and teething toys, and so much more!

Ready to get started? Let's make sure your bag is packed with everything you need to feel empowered during your unmedicated birth.

First, bring plenty of snacks and your favorite beverages.

There are a few things you'll want to make sure you have on hand to keep your energy up during labor so you can have a smooth delivery.

Pack snacks that are high in protein and easy to eat on the go, I recommend granola bars or nuts. You'll also want to bring along a water bottle or two, or even get a reusable one, as staying hydrated is key during labor. I recommend getting a cup with a stray so if you're recovering from a contraction you don't have to exert more energy to tip the water bottle up.

Consider bringing liquid IV or something else to replenish electrolytes.

Honey sticks are a great option for replenishing some of your energy also. The natural sugar in it gives you an extra boost. So in between contractions you can bring one of those sticks out to suck on.

It's always a good idea to have a few changes of clothes with you in case your labor goes longer than expected. After all, you never know what may happen during childbirth!

For an unmedicated birth in Minot, you may want to pack items that will keep you comfortable, relaxed and warm

There are a few things you can bring to the hospital to help make your unmedicated birth more homey feeling.

Consider bringing a loose-fitting nightgown or robe. This will help you stay comfortable during labor, and it will also make it easier for nurses and doctors to check your progress (if you choose, I'll talk more about this in another post).

I also recommend bringing some warm clothes for you and baby since we all know hospitals can get super cold, especially in great old North Dakota. Consider bringing a car seat cover along if you're due in the fall. Minot weather is unpredictable so it's much better to have it and not need it.

Also, pack a small bag with any essential oils or other relaxation techniques that you want to use during labor. This could include a diffuser and some lavender oil, or a positive affirmations deck. You could even bring a string of fairy lights to make the environment much more calming.

My doula used lavender in the diffuser but a roller ball is a great alternative to bringing a diffuser along. You just put some along your jawline, on your wrists, you can even put some on your chest and forehead. You can purchase one here.

Another game-changer for your birth experience? Bringing a doula! She won't fit in your hospital bag, but she might carry it for you!

A doula gives support, both emotional and physical, and can be an incredible advocate for you during labor. They're not only there to help you stay calm and focused but also to use their knowledge to enhance your comfort using techniques like massage, position changes and counter pressure.

I am a certified birth and postpartum doula certified through Still-Birthday so I can also offer support through any kind of loss. If you want recommendations for other birth/postpartum doulas Sherrica Blackmon (with An Intimate Beginning, LLC) is a wonderful option. She was my doula through my second birth.

Nikki Jo Tickerhoof is another wonderful option and she's with Thistle and Vine Doula Services. If you're closer to the Dickinson area and looking for a doulatog (doula and birth photographer) then Regina Martin with northdakotabirthphotographer (her tag on instagram) is amazing also!

When you come prepared with these items, you can help ensure that your birth is as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

If you're planning on breastfeeding, pack a nursing bra and some nursing pads

Here's a list of items you could pack in your hospital bag:

  • A nursing pillow: This will help you position your baby correctly while breastfeeding
  • Nursing pads: These absorb leakage and help to keep your clothing dry
  • Breast milk storage bags: These can be used to store expressed milk for later use
  • Lanolin Cream or nipple butter: This can be used to soothe sore nipples
  • A water bottle: This will help you stay hydrated while nursing
  • Haakka collector: This will help you collect leaking milk while nursing baby so that liquid gold doesn't go to waste

By packing these items in your hospital bag, you'll be prepared to start breastfeeding as soon as your baby is born!

But, keep in mind that some of these may not get used, it's all personal preference. For me, I didn't use the nursing pillow. It just sat in the corner of our hospital room. You could opt out of bringing and just use a folded up pillow or blanket. Storage bags may not get used either. Those first couple days you're only expressing colostrum (just drops is totally normal!) Your mature milk takes 3-5 days to fully come in (sometimes sooner, sometimes later) so you won't be getting multiple ounces until then.

If you have Tricare as your insurance, they cover a lactation consultant/counselor (some other insurances do also). Don't be scared to use one, they are there for a reason and can help you achieve a successful breastfeeding journey.

Next, if you're going to labor in the shower I recommend bringing your own towels and a shirt or a two piece swimsuit

Hydrotherapy in labor can provide a more relaxed birth experience. If you're planning on utilizing this there are a few things you'll need to bring with you to the hospital.

Consider bringing a two piece swimsuit, a one piece may work just fine but I recommend a two piece so that when baby decides to make their debut you aren't worried about completely stripping. You'll also need a large towel to dry off before you deliver.

I recommend packing your own towels anyway since the hospital doesn't have very good ones. They're small, kind of flimsy and honestly don't dry the best.

Don't forget to bring your hypnobirthing audio or other calm meditations you might want to listen to during labor!

Trinity hospital does not allow water births for risk of infection/liability and the select rooms that do have a tub in there, the tubs are not very big. The shower is a wonderful option of utilizing warm water during contractions. You can stand under the water and even sway to get through them.

Trinity does provide peanut balls and yoga balls for you to use also, so don't be scared to ask to use them!

Of course, don't forget your birth photographer!

There's something to be said for hiring a professional birth photographer!

Here's just a few benefits of having a birth photographer on hand for your hospital birth:

  1. They can capture all the special moments, from the first push to the moment your baby is placed in your arms
  2. They know how to work within the strict confines of a hospital setting, meaning you'll get beautiful photos without disrupting the flow of your labor and delivery
  3. They can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during labor, knowing that they're taking care of documenting everything
  4. Your partner can be active and involved rather than worrying about getting photos

So, if you're considering hiring a birth photographer for your upcoming hospital birth, rest assured you'll be in good hands! I can be there as a doulatog or just your photographer! I promise you, no one has ever regretted hiring a photographer.
